Effectiveness of Acupuncture vs Usual Care for Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain – The PEACE Randomized Clinical Trial
The acronym PEACE comes from the Personalized Electroacupuncture vs Auricular Acupuncture Comparative Effectiveness (PEACE) clinical trial. The trial was conducted over three years and completed in April 2020. Three hundred and sixty adults were included in the study. All of the participants had a prior cancer diagnosis but no current evidence of disease. They all reported musculoskeletal pain for at least 3 months. They also all self-reported pain intensity ranging from 0 (no pain) to 10 (worst pain).
Participants in this study had greater reductions in pain scores from their baseline through the twelfth week compared with patients receiving usual care. However, patients receiving auricular acupuncture did have more adverse events during the trial.
