Hollywood’s Cancer Survivors
Kathy Bates lived the nightmare of a cancer diagnosis. In 2013 Bates was diagnosed with stage 2 breast cancer. She lived through it bravely. She also bravely talked about it in Hollywood. While she didn’t share her treatment at the time, like Joan Lunden did, Bates has been very vocal about it recently. She’s been vocal about her treatment and the lymphedema that followed treatment. She’s done the talk show circuit discussing her cancer and subsequent lymphedema
Here she’s on The Doctors.
Lymphedema is often a side effect of cancer treatment although not always. It can effect pepole who have never had cancer. For more information about lymphedema check out our Side Effects page.
Hugh Jackman, aka Wolverine, is also a Hollywood cancer survivor. When he found a spot on his nose in 2013, he thought it was a drop of blood caused by his Wolverine claws. It was actually a basil cell carcinoma. He tells the story in a People Magazine interview from 2015.
Here’s the People Magazine interview with Hugh Jackman.
Jane Fonda has experienced her own battles with cancer. She’s been diagnosed twice in her life. Her first battle was with breast cancer in 2010. Her most recent battle was won just this month with a cancer removed from her lower lip. Here is the story from CNN Entertainment
Edie Falco The Sopranos star is a breast cancer survivor who kept her battle secret due to her job. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003, she didn’t discuss her illness for quite some time. Now she says, “With the cancer a secret, I bucked up, put on my Carmela fingernails, and was ready to work.” Here she is speaking with an interviewer for Archive of American Television.
Robert DeNiro has starred in over 60 films including Taxi Driver, Goodfellas, and The Godfather Part II, was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2003. His father had passed away with his own battle with cancer in 1993, and may have a large influenced DeNiro’s own statement: “Time goes on. So whatever you’re going to do, do it. Do it now. Don’ wait.”
Ben Stiller was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2014 at the age of 48. He has been very vocal about his diagnosis with the purpose of getting more men to talk with their doctors about getting tested. The PSA test is a simple blood test. Here is Ben Stiller on Live with Kelly and Ryan discussing his recovery.
